"Toes on the Nose: Morocco Style"

“You know,” Jakke the Belgian Hippy said as we stood on the rocks at the end of Imsouane Point, “when you look at this from here, it’s really just a big playground”.

The ocean in front of us was full of bearded travellers on single-fin longboards, Germans on fishes, grandfathers on twin-fin eggs, and Swedish girls on funboards: all riding the long, mellow Moroccan waves and all doing it simply because it’s fun.

Folk don’t play enough these days. Even the things we do for fun end up having a practical purpose. We hit the gym to get fit, read to learn, play games to win and climb mountains to say we did.

When we’re kids we play all the time – doing things purely for enjoyment and recreation rather than a serious purpose – but you’d be hard-pressed to find adults doing the same, unless you’re camped out at Imsouane, that is.

Like most of Morocco, Imsouane is staggeringly beautiful

So, in the style of a Thomas Campbell film, we tapped into Jakke’s vibe for a few days in Imsouane. On our last morning there Stone surfed for five hours and on five different boards, none of which were his. The rides were very, very long but extremely mellow and there was a great mood in the water- enhanced by the fact that we were surfing in an amphitheatre of cliffs in front of an audience of camels and fishermen.

Imsouane

Access?

Take road from Agadir to Essaouira. Half way is the turn off to Imsouane.

How does the beach look?

Cool beach in fishermen's community, clay homes built into the cliff overlook the beach. Super typical.

How are the waves ? (direction, type and quality of the waves only)

2 spots: Cathedral is a point break, fast not too steep. If the spot works well it's beautiful. Sometimes the whole beach works, not just the point, so there's space for everyone.

Second spot is the bay ! Longboard heaven. Great for beginners and if you just want to ride perfect long waves. When this thing breaks far out on south swells, it's amazing ! One minute rides. You'll go to bed seeing lines.
